What seven problems did Queen Elizabeth face when she became queen in 1558?

A

• Catholics thought she had no right to the throne since Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church and married Anna Boleyn, but people don’t accept this marriage since it’s not Catholic

• Sexism against women

• People think she needs to get married

• Most people are Catholic, and she needs England to be Protestant again

• Money Problems, in £300,000 in debt for war with France

• Mary Queen of Scots wants the throne

• Spain is Catholic and powerful so might team up with other Catholic country’s and try to overthrow England

What is the Act of Supremacy 1559?

A

• Elizabeth is made ‘Supreme Governor’ of the Church of England

• All clergy had to swear an oath loyalty to Elizabeth and her new Protestant Church

• Visitations (inspections) to ensure all priests are following her rules, anyone who refused is sacked

What is the Act of Uniformity 1559?

A

• A Protestant book of prayer must be used in all churches, clergy who refused would be punished

• Everyone has to attend church every Sunday

• People who refused to attend her churches must pay a 12p fine

A

• A set of instructions to enforce the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity

• Priests must have a license to work

• All churches must have an English bible

• Decorations & paintings were allowed in churches

• Priests and bishops must wear special fancy robes
