Q

How do gases and liquids compare in their ability to be compressed?

A

Gases compress to about 10% of their original volume. The reason is, the gas molecules are more spread out. Gas molecules have lots of space to squish in to.

Liquids do not VISIBLY compress because the molecules are too close together. Liquid molecules really have no space to squish in to.

Q

How do gases and liquids compare in their ability to be attenuated?

A

Gas molecules are free and energetic so they easily attenuate into any space you give them. They take the shape & volume of their container

Liquid molecules are less energetic and stuck together so they DONT attenuate to fill spaces.
(Liquid does not fill the space) they fill the bottom of the container

Q

How does the Torricelli tube work?

A

Air goes into the syringe making low pressure inside the tube. Outside normal pressure wins and PUSHES liquid up.

Q

How does the Torricelli fountain work?

A

When syringe is pulled, air leaves the flask making low pressure. Normal pressure trapped in the vile PUSHES the water out.

Q

How do the Magdeburg Hemispheres work?

A

Removing air creates low pressure inside MH. Outside, normal pressure wins and pushes the MH together

Q

How does a vacuum cleaner work?

A

A fan blows air out of the vacuum, creating low pressure inside. Outside normal air rushes in pushing dirt along.

Q

How does a straw work?

A

Low pressure is made in lungs and mouth. Normal air on the outside pushes the drink up the straw

Q

3 ways of increasing air pressure

A
  • Increasing the number of molecules
  • Compress the gas into a smaller space
  • Heat the gas causing the molecules to move faster and collide with more force

Q

Why does air go into a syringe when you pull the plunger?

A

Air goes into the syringe because it can. The air flies into any space give it. Air is not pulled in.
