Define stress
Stress is a substantial imbalance between the demand and the ability cope, under conditions where the demand is not met, there are important consequences
Define anxiety
A negative emotional state with feelings of nervousness, worry and apprehension
Definition of arousal
arousal is a blend of psychological activity in a person, and it refers to the intensity dimensions of motivation at a particular moment
Explain Stress
There are 2 types of stress
Eustress: A good form of stress and this helps athletes to preform under pressure. This form off stress helps athletes focus more on aspects of there specific sport
Distress: A bad form of stress this is an extreme form of anxiety and worry related to performance.
Explain Anxiety
There are 2 types of of anxiety and they also have 2 types of symptoms
state: this is a temporary, ever changing emotional state. For example when turning up to the stadium, you may have changed in feeling for a certain amount of time
Trait: this is the natural anxiety you have whether it is low, high or moderate and it doesn’t change
Cognitive: this is all to do with the mind and it is your thoughts of stress and having a poor mindset
Somatic: this is how the body responds to the impact of stress for example sweaty palm or feeling sick
Explain Arousal
There are 4 effects of arousal on performance
Change in attentional focus - this is where if you have a high arousal, you will have a narrow attentional focus which can lead to aggression. If your arousal level is too low, then you will have too broad of a attentional field meaning that too many distractions. You can also have the perfect level which is the best.
Increase in stress and anxiety - there is a link between arousal, stress and anxiety.
Flow state - this is where the body is totally focussed on the task and movements -don’t need to be thought about as everything just appears as a second nature. The body is in a state of relaxation and ability to have high performance.
Choking - this is used to show a dramatic reduction in a athletes performance after put in a high pressure situation
