Question 4 - Daniell Cell Flashcards
(9 cards)
Which is the cathode and which is the anode in a Daniell’s cell?
Zinc/zinc sulphate is the anode
Copper/copper sulphate is the cathode
Where do reduction and oxidation happen in a cell?
Reduction = cathode
Oxidation = anode
How is the Daniell’s cell written using standard cell notation?
Zn(s)|Zn2+(aq)||Cu2+(aq)|Cu(s)
How is E cell calculated?
Ecell = Ecathode - Eanode
How are the cathode and anode determined using reduction potentials?
Greater reduction potential = cathode
What equation is used to find the potential?
Nernst equation, Ecell = Ecell - RT/zF lnQ
What is the equation used to find Q?
Q = a(products)/a(reactants)
a = activity
How do you find activity to fin Q?
Concentration.
a = y x molarity, at dilute concentration y->1 and molarity->concentration. Therefore activity = molar concentration.
When would you add a power to the equation to find Q?
When there is a big number infront of a product or reactant.
Eg. 2Ag, [Ag]^2
