open ended- respondent have freedom to extend or give whatever answer they wish
close ended- limited answers to choose from
what are questionnaires favoured by interpretivist or positivist
positivist
what are the practical advantages of a questionare
quick
cheap
representative- can reach a large scale
no need for training
data is easy to quantify
allows comparison of different answers over time, or different groups of people
detached
why are questionares reliable
questionares can be reused, same questions and answers
there is no researcher present therefore no influence on answers
why are questionares good for hypothesis testing
they can test hypothesis about cause and effect through reviewing the answers and depicting correlations.
what does it mean if a questionare is detached
respondent has no contact with the researcher and no influence is made on answers/ objective
what are the disadvantages of questionares
data is limited, short and brief.
may need to offer incentives
response rate, especially with postal questionares, people tend to not answer them.
how can a higher response rate be achieved by questionares
collected by hand
incentives
why is a low response rate bad
Because people who have answered the questions may be very different from those who haven’t answered.
why are questionares inflexible
close ended questionares dont allow questions to be expanded or explained, and answers cant be expanded in more detail.
why can detachment be an issue
respondents may interpret questions differently, there is no researcher to explain the question.
what is right answerism and why is it a disadvantage
right answerism- when respondents try to please the researcher and choose answers which are more socially accepted.
