What are questionnaires?
A written or self-completed social survey, often with closed-ended, pre-set questions.
Positivist or Interpretivist
Positivist approach - collect structured, numerical data, which positivists believe gives you more scientific, ‘truthful’ findings about society.
How are they distributed
Post, email or in person
Strengths
Are quick and cheap Are reliable - can be repeated and compared Detached and objective - less chance of researcher bias. Are ethical - usually voluntary sinful anonymous
Limitations
Low response rate - especially with response rates
Lack of depth - no room for detailed answers (no verstehen)
Inflexible - once sent. cant change
Types of questionnaires
Closed-ended, Open-ended
What are closed-ended
Pre-set questions with fixed answers (multiple choice, yes/no)
What are open-ended
People write their own answers in their own words
