Deviant
Describes the behavior of individuals who are unable to adapt to social roles or establish appropriate interpersonal relationships.
Disorder
A disturbance/general abnormality in normal functioning (mental, physical, or psychological).
Impairment
The disorder creates a barrier to typical functioning.
A state of being diminished, weakened, or damaged (mentally or physically).
Exceptional
A label for an individual whose physical, intellectual, or behavioral performance differs substantially from what is typical/normal (on either end of the spectrum).
Gifted/Talented
An individual who possess extraordinary abilities in one or more areas.
Handicap
A limitation imposed on a person by the environment and the person’s capacity to cope with that limitation.
Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
A written framework for delivering appropriate and free education to every eligible disabled student.
Individualized Family Service Plan
A plan of services for infants & toddlers and their families.
Includes statements regarding child’s present development level, the family’s strengths and needs, the major outcomes of the plan, specific interventions systems to accomplish outcomes, dates of initiation and duration of services, and a plan for transition into public schools.
Intellectual disabilities
Substantial limitations in functioning, characterized by significantly subaverage intellectual functioning concurrent with related limitations in two or more adaptive skills.
Learning disabilities
A condition in which one or more of an individual’s basic psychological processes in understanding or using language are deficient.
Least restrictive environment
Students with disabilities are to be educated with their peers without disabilities to the maximum extent appropriate.
Reasonable accommodations
Modifications as a means to create a fair and level playing field for the student.
Section 504/ADA
A plan that provides for reasonable accommodations/modifications in assessment and instruction to create a fair and level playing field for students who qualify as disabled under Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Special education
Specially designed instruction provided at no cost to parents in all settings.
Zero exclusion principle
IDEA requires all public schools provide special education and related services to all individual needs regardless of disability.
