30
Q

Day 1 of the menstrual cycle = 1st day of bleeding. Fertilization did not occur and so progesterone decreased which made blood supply to the endometrium disappear. Endometrium dies and sloughs off. Estrogen starts to rise slightly which promotes endometrial healing and cessation of menses. Low levels of Estrogen, progesterone and LH trigger more FSH release (it has been steadily rising throughout menses, so follicular development has already started). The rising estrogen levels have a positive feedback mechanism on LH and when the dominant follicle emerges and starts secreting large levels of estrogen, an LH SURGE occurs about 36 hours prior to ovulation, reaching its peak around 10-12 hours prior. After ovulation, FSH and LH (inhibited by rising progesterone), and progesterone (secreted by the corpus luteum) becomes the main player to prepare the endometrium for fertilization.
