Quiz 1: Definitions and Important Info Flashcards

Know basic vocabulary, definitions, and conditions for forest growth, longevity, and health. (12 cards)

1
Q

Xeric vs. Mesic vs. Hydric

A
  • Xeric: dry environment/soil conditions w/ little moisture (drought tolerant plants)
  • Mesic: moderate/well-balanced moisture conditions (supports wide variety of species)
  • Hydric: Wet/saturated soil conditions where soil is waterlogged for part of growing season

Q

What is bark plasticity?

A

Determined by biology w/ some flexibility through both biology (reproduction, hybridization, mutations) and environment (density of growing area, sunlight availability, temp. differences):
* environment can lead to darkening of bark color (white oak) or the lightening of it (black cherry)
* Biology sets in stone bark length, color, texture, and thickness
