Quiz 1: Definitions and Important Info Flashcards
Know basic vocabulary, definitions, and conditions for forest growth, longevity, and health. (12 cards)
Xeric vs. Mesic vs. Hydric
- Xeric: dry environment/soil conditions w/ little moisture (drought tolerant plants)
- Mesic: moderate/well-balanced moisture conditions (supports wide variety of species)
- Hydric: Wet/saturated soil conditions where soil is waterlogged for part of growing season
Define vertical structure
Layering of vegetation in a forest/plant community from the ground the the upper canopy
What characteristics differentiate trees?
Leaf shape, compoundedness, serration, size
Bark patterns, depth, shape, thickness
Fruits, flowers, age, canopy
What is bark plasticity?
Determined by biology w/ some flexibility through both biology (reproduction, hybridization, mutations) and environment (density of growing area, sunlight availability, temp. differences):
* environment can lead to darkening of bark color (white oak) or the lightening of it (black cherry)
* Biology sets in stone bark length, color, texture, and thickness
List and briefly describe the main tree diseases
Chesnut Disease
Beech bark disease
Beech leaf disease
Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
Why are Box turtles important?
Succession
Evergreen vs Deciduous
Biome vs Biogeographic region
Provide an example
Forest types of the Eastern US
- mixed mesophytic
- western mesophytic
- Oak Hickory
- Oak-Chesnut
- Oak Pine
- South E. Evergreen
- Beech Maple
- Maple-Basswood
- Hemlock-white, Pine-northern Hardwood
Forest Cover
Affected by human interraction
Soil/land types for Forest growth
- Alluvial: loose sediment deposited by plowing water
- Palustrine: saturated/flooded for significant portion of growing season (ocean derived salts)
- Lacustrine: Standing water; sedimentary rock formations at bottom of ancient lakes
