Quiz 2 Flashcards
What is a conversion factor?
A ratio of equivalent quantities used to express a quantity in different units.
What is density?
Mass/Volume (a physical property and has a specific value)
What is the density of water? (H2O)
Approximately 1 g/cm^3
How to find K when you have C?
C + 273.15 = K
How to find C when you have K?
K - 273.15 = C
How to find F when you have C?
(9/5)(C) + 32 = F
How to find C when you have F?
(5/9)(F - 32) = C
Sig Figs
The greater number of significant figures in a quantity, the greater its certainty.
What sig figs are important?
All sig figs are important EXCEPT zeros that are used only to position the decimal point.
i.e.) 0.000356 –> only three sig figs
How many sig figs are in 1.030?
Four
How many sig figs are in 5300?
Two
What are the sig fig rules for multiplication and division?
Same as the sig figs in the measurements –> least amount of sig figs
What are the sig fig rules for addition and subtraction?
Count the number of least sig figs from the decimal point. (DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DECIMAL)
What are rounding rules for sig figs if the number is 5 and is not greater or less than the preceding number?
If the preceding number before the five is odd, round the preceding number up.
If the preceding number before the five is even, keep the preceding number the same.
What is precision?
Precision refers to how close the measurements in a series are to each other.
What is accuracy?
Accuracy refers to how close each measurement is to the actual value.
What is systematic error?
Systematic error produces values that are either all higher or all lower than the actual value.
What is random error (noise)?
Random error produces values that are both higher and lower than the actual value.
What is an element?
The simplest type of substance with unique physical and chemical properties. An element consists of only one type of atom It cannot be broken down into any simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
What is a molecule?
A structure that consists of two or more atoms that are chemically bound together and thus behaves as an independent unit.
What is a compound?
A substance composed of two or more different elements which are chemically combined.
What is a mixture?
A group of two or more elements and/or compounds that are physically intermingled.
What is a heterogenous (different) mixture?
It has one or more visible boundaries between the components.
What is a homogenous (same) mixture?
It has no visible boundaries because the components are mixed as individual atoms, ions, and molecules. Also called a solution.
