produces ketones when body can’t produce enough insulin

- Nerve damage: ie. loss of sensation to foot or legs

What are the three major components of managing diabetes?

What can delay the onset of diabetic complications?
Tight control of blood sugar (4-7 range) how can this be dangerous? : result in hypoglycemia low BGL

Low BGL and excessive insulin
Signs of hypoglycemia?
Confused, nervousness, tired: coma /death
Hyperglycemia signs?
Dehydrations, weight loss
What does the endocrine System do?
Employs hormones to relay messages. Secretes hormones.
Negative feedback loop does what?
Brings back to a set point… Insulin does this to get rid of sugar high.. bring things back down.
Where can hormones cause effect? (specificity)
Anywhere but will only bind to specific cell receptors
The cells that a hormone affects are called?
Target Cells
What 2 types of hormones are there?
- Steriod (lipids and fats

Pancreas: secretes
Liver :stores
Does the liver produce hormones?
Not fot blood suga it stores energy
What are the islets of lengerhans? What cells are in there?
Within the pancreas
Alpha cells- secrete glucose
Beta cells-secrete insulin
