Oedipus

A

born son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta of Thebes, the Delphic oracle predicted that he grow and kill his father and marry his mother. To escape this prophecy the parents gave him to King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth. When he became a young adult he heard rumor of the truth and the Delphic oracle confirmed so he decided to leave Corinth. As he was leaving the Delphi he fought and killed a man blocking the bridge…this man was his real father King Laius. As he continued his journey to Thebes he came across the sphinx who was plaguing the city with a riddle. He solved it and got rid of the sphinx and as a reward he was given the hand of the widow Queen Jocasta…..his Mother.

A

daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Agamemnon sacrificed her sister Iphigenia fro favorable winds to sail the Greek fleet for the Trojan War. When Agememnon returned from the Trojan war he returned with war booty, Cassandra. But while he was away fighting his wife Clytemnestra had an affair with Agememnon’s cousin Aegisthus. When Agememnon returned his wife and her lover murdered him. Agememnon and Clytemnestra’s son Orestes helped and encouraged Electra to avenge their father’s murder and killed their mother Clytemenstran and her lover Aegisthus.

Narcissus

A

a very handsome youth who happened to catch sight of a reflection of himself in a pool of water. He fell in love with he beautiful image and became so obsessed by longing for it that he pined away or, in some versions, fell into the pool and drowned. He was turned into the flower that bears his name.

Oedipus complex

A

Sigmund Freud’s famous theory-personalities develop early. For infant and toddler boys they identify the mother in a pleasure-seeking way through her provision of food and warmth. Because sexual is also present in young males and a pleasurably desire the Male child has sexual desire for the mother and wishes to rid himself of the father.
