Common Interpreter Errors
Substituting, Transforming, Omitting, Polishing, and Additions
Substituting
An interpreter error that occurs when the interpreter uses other words, phrases, or entire sentences in place of the actual words
Transforming
An interpreter error that occurs when an interpreter changes the word order of the original statement; the meaning may be altered slightly
Omitting
An interpreter error that occurs when an interpreter leaves something out of a message; it might be a word, phrase, or an entire sentence
Polishing
An interpreter error that occurs when the interpreter distorts nuances and/or meanings of words or concepts in order to refine or improve the quality of the language used by the provider and/or the patient
Additions
An interpreter error that occurs when an interpreter adds words, phrases, or sentences that were not said

To establish a set of standards/guidelines that will enhance the communication process and allow the interpreter to be faithful to the message and achieve as close to 100% accuracy as possible

My name is Jacqueline and I will be your Spanish interpreter. I will be your voice; therefore, when I talk, I will speak in the first person as if I were you. Please look at and speak directly to the client. I will repeat everything you say. If you do not wish the client to know something, please do not say it. I will give a hand signal if I need you to pause so that I may ensure an accurate interpretation. I will repeat this to the client in their language.

Discrimination or individuals on the basis of national origin, charging patients/clients for language assistance services, requiring patients/clients to bring their own interpreters (e.g. friends or family)
What does Title VI require?
LEP persons must be notified of the availability of free interpreting services, Interpreters must be competent in medical terminology and understand issues of confidentiality and impartiality, translation of commonly used documents, sight translation of documents that have not been translated
