Quiz Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is the water cycle?
a continuous pattern in nature in which water moves as it changes state above, on, and below the surface of the earth
What is the scientific definition of melting?
the change of state from a solid to liquid; occurs when a solid gains thermal energy
What is sublimation?
the change of state from a solid to a gas without first becoming a liquid; occurs when a solid gains thermal energy
What is evaporation?
the change of state from a liquid to a gas; occurs when a liquid gains thermal energy
What is condensation?
the change of state from a gas to a liquid; occurs when a gas loses thermal energy
What is deposition?
the change of state from gas to solid; occurs when a gas loses thermal energy
What is the scientific definition of freezing
the change of state from a liquid to a solid; occurs when a liquid loses thermal energy
What is thermal energy?
the energy that is generated and measured by heat. An example of thermal energy is the kinetic energy of an atom or the chemical energy in a molecule
What is runoff?
water from precipitation and snowmelt that flows over earths surface
What is ground water?
water that seeps through soil and cracks in rock; source of water for underground springs and wells
What is aquifer?
a geological formation of loose rock or soil that is saturated with ground water
What is Water table?
the depth at which loose rock and soil below earths surface are saturated with water; the upper boundary of an aquifer
What is precipitation?
solid to liquid water that falls to earths surface
What is a polar ice sheet?
a frozen field of ice covering either the north pole or the south pole
What is an ice cap?
a large area of ice that permanently covers land
What is a glacier?
a river of ice, formed from snow accumulated over hundreds of years, that moves slowly downhill under the force of gravity
What is the definition of water treatment?
the process of removing potentially dangerous substances from water to make it more acceptable for a desired end-use
What is floc?
sticky clumps formed from the reaction of alum in water, combined with sand and other waste solids
What is sustainability?
being able to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What are water particles made up of?
one oxygen particle and two hydrogen particles joined together
What are the 3 states of water?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
What are the six changes of state?
- Melting
- Sublimation
- Evaporation
- Freezing
- Condensation
- Deposition
What are some alternative treatment options for cleaning water?
Reverse Osmosis
Ultraviolet Radiation
Boiling
What are the 8 stages of water treatment in order?
Intake, addition of chemicals, coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation, Filtration, disinfection, storage, your street/neighbourhood
