song. The US Congress oficially made it the country’s national anthem in 1931

When did the Civil War break out? What happened?
The Civil War broke out in 1861, and it ended in 1865. It was a war between the northern and the southern states of America. The northern states were called the abolitionists because they wanted to make slavery illegal, but the southern states refused. They wanted to have more power than the federal government, so they became secessionists. In 1860, Abraham LINCOLN became President, and the North won the war in 1865. General Robert E.LEE surrendered to General Ulysses S. GRANT.

What is Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It celebrated the first meal between the first settlers and the Indians in 1621. Indeed, when they arrived from England on the Mayflower in 1620, the first pilgrims could not find enough to eat and many of them died. But in the following summer Native Americans showed them what food was safe to eat, so that they could save food for the next winter. They held a big celebration to thank God and the Amerindians for the fact that they survived. It is traditional to have a large family meal with turkey, cranberry jelly, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pies.
What is the Trail of Tears?
The name was given to the long journey from Georgia to Oklahoma made in 1838 by the Cherokee and other Native American tribes. They were being forced by the US government to move to the Indian Territory (a land west of the Mississippi River where they were forced to go) and thousands died on the way.
What is Mount Rushmore?
Mount Rushmore is high rock cliff in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is famous for the very large heads of four US presidents in the rock: George WASHINGTON, Thomas JEFFERSON, Abraham LINCOLN, and Theodore ROOSEVELT. The heads are each about 60 feet (=18 meters) high and were designed by Gutzon BORGLUM and carved between 1927 and 1941.
