Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It celebrated the first meal between the first settlers and the Indians in 1621. Indeed, when they arrived from England on the Mayflower in 1620, the first pilgrims could not find enough to eat and many of them died. But in the following summer Native Americans showed them what food was safe to eat, so that they could save food for the next winter. They held a big celebration to thank God and the Amerindians for the fact that they survived. It is traditional to have a large family meal with turkey, cranberry jelly, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pies.

Senator McCarthy was a US politician. As a Republican he led a campaign against Communists in the US society and government in the 1950s, during the Cold War. Many people were encouraged to give information about their friends and those they worked with. Many Americans were forced from their jobs and blacklisted, In 1954 the US Senate officially condemned McCarthy's activities, and his influence decreased.

Who was Martin Luther KING, Jr?
M.L. KING (1929-68) was the most important leader of the US civil rights movement. KING was an African American Baptist minister. He was influenced by Christianity and Gandhi's principles. He encouraged non-violent protest and led a series of peaceful campaigns against segregation in the Southern states. In August 1963, he led about 250 000 people on a protest march to Washington, D.C, where he delivered his famous speech, / have a Dream, at the Lincoln Memorial.
