QUiz one Flashcards

1
Q

What is an isotope

A

an isotope is an element that has same number of protons as another atom of the same element but are different in the amount of neutrons, thus different masses

Q

Name 3 Uses for radioactive isotopes and the isotopes involved in the process

A

Smoke alarms - Americium 241, produces non lethal amounts of radiation to help aid detection of smoke through the electric current

Nuclear energy
splitting of uranium-235 causes extreme release of energy leading to nuclear bombs.

Studies of Global Warming- they compare the ratio between O-16 and O-18 and 0-16 evaporates faster cuz lighter so if there is less 0-16 then the temp is warmer.

Q

how does the emission spectra prove the energy levels are quantized

A

Because as the electron transfers from one energy level to another it released energy, similar to a stair case you cannot step in between energy levels and therefore each level of energy has its own discrete orbit ring. the released energy is shown on the electron spectrum as singular lines proving the discrete levels.

Q

why do the outer lines of an atom converge?

A

because the energy levels inside the atom are closer together at higher energy.

Q

qualitive vs quantative

A

qualitative analysis in chemistry gives the presence or absence of different chemical components in a sample whereas

quantitative analysis in chemistry gives the amount of different chemical components present in a given sample
