bright pied piper
bright is ironic as it juxtaposes with how larry may seem bright and charismatic on the outside, but in reality he has dark secrets. his charisma is emphasised with the use of plosives as he gained the attention of the children. the use of pied piper also has a dark side to it as it refers to the character who manipulated children and lured them away from their innocence, foreshadowing what he did with nicole
dazzling movie star teeth
showed his charisma and how he manipulated everyone with just his appearance of dazzling.
does that one sin of mine wipe away all the good things i’ve done
attempts to justify his actions from everything he achieved. could also be refrrring to francis as he jumped on the grenade and although it was an attempt to kill himself in order to not commit the ultimate sin, does it cancel out the lives of the people he saved, reversing francis’s guilt. wipe - imagery of cleansed and dismissive of dirt
interrogative sentence
we love our sins, i love the sweet young things
shows his lack of remorse as he’s still reminiscing about these sweet young things which is conveyed through repetition. his only regret was no more of these sweet young things which is pedestrian and make the audience feel uneasy and no sympathy for larry
pale, eyes sunken into his sockets
presented completely different to when we first meet him as he is now old and fragile. this use of juxtaposition may be to show how his true self is revealed along with all his dark deeds, emphasising cormier theme of appearance vs reality. also shows how war mentally and physically impacts soldiers
my nostrils are like 2 small caves…my teeth are gone…i have no eyebrows
francis distorted face after the war which creates sympathy for the reader as he is still young but have to deal with the long term consequences along with the trauma. he uses this to his advantage by hiding his face with a scarf to not only hide his physical appearance from scaring others but also his identity so others won’t ask about his silver star and he can complete his mission peacefully
i was knelt like a knight at her feet…silently pledged my love and loyalty
the use of this smilie shows his childhood innocence and nativity as he saw him self as her knight in shining armor to save her whenever she was in trouble. this was ironic as he didn’t save her whenever she needed him most even thought he pledged which led to his guilt and their relationship to fall apart. this is also a declarative sentence which shows how lovesick he was and believing it was love and first sight showing childhood innocence
part of the hell i earned
imagery of he’ll shows how he was self loathing and wanted to be punished for his sins, believing he deserved to go to hell as he was brought up with catholic beleifs and immense guilt of trying to end his life and not protecting nicole hence earning “hell” even thought he was only a child. huge sympathy from reader
i shouldn’t have said those things to you that day…you weren’t to blame
nicole realises that it wasn’t all francis fault but partially hers as well for trusting larry as he made her feel “special” like he did with everyone else, including francis as he let him win the ping pong so that he could take advantage of them and manipulate them. this also relives francis of his guilt after betraying her and completely juxtapose to the direct address of accusations “you didn’t do anything”.
her cheekbones were more prominent and her eyes seemed to be bigger
glimpse of mischief in her eyes
these adjectives show how she got stronger and more aware which was the result of her silent battles as it transformed her, getting rid of her feminine features so she can transform and become a new wiser person, forgetting the past. this also made her unrecognisable to francis and show how their special bond was gone as he couldn’t find that mischief…
silence falls between us
shows the growing distance between them as the repetition of silence is used. also shows how their childhood innocence is gone. this is also triggering for nicole as it brings back to when nicole and francis didn’t do anything and was silent to to her after she had been assaulted
ping pong ball striking the table
plopping of the ball
anti climatic ending
also sensory imagery and flashback of moments francis spent with larry which is melancholic and affects the reader
