R1.3 Combustion Reactions Flashcards

(6 cards)

1
Q

Methanol Fuel cell

A

methanol produces electrical energy from chemical energy
* contribute to carbon emissions

anode = oxidized & burnt to carbon dioxide
cathode = oxygen from the air acts as an oxidizing agent and is reduced to water

Q

Biofuel cells

A
  • Biofuels = organic compounds produced by carbon dioxide fixation through photosynthesis.
  • Burning produces carbon dioxide, but there is no net effect as the carbon dioxide fixation counteracts this production.
  • = carbon neutral as the carbon atoms in the biofuel originally come from the carbon dioxide fixed from the atmosphere.
