Is race a biological fact?
No; racial difference does not exist on a genetic level
How does society define racial groups?
Perceived phenotypical or ancestral differences
Biological determinism
social and economic differences between races are the result of biological factors.
What is race?
A group of people who share a set of physical characteristics and said to share a common bloodline
Four Components of race:
- Symbolic category
- Based on phenotype or ancestry
- Cultural specific and time specific
- Misrecognized as natural
What is a symbolic category?
something that is actively created and re-created by humans
What is naturalization?
A process where something created by humans is mistaken as something created by nature
What is racism?
Belief that members of seperate races possess diff/unequal human traits
Three key beliefs of racist ideology
- Humans are divided into bloodlines/physical types
- Bloodlines/physical traits are linked to distinct cultures, behaviors, personalities, and intellectual abilities
- Certain groups are superior to others
Racialization
Formation of a new racial identity
Ethnicity
voluntary; one’s ethnic affiliation
FLUID
When does an ethnic identity become racialized?
Under a forced, involuntary label or racial marker
Symbolic ethnicity
The sense of identifying with a past or future nationality
Nationality
membership in a specific country
Cross-institutional advantage and disadvantage
A phenomenon in which people are positively or negatively served across multiple institutions
Cumulative advantage and disadvantage
Advantage or disadvantage that builds over the life course
Intergenerational advantage and disadvantage
Advantages and disadvantages that are passed from parents to children.
Structural violence
Institutional discrimination that injures the
body and mind.
Prejudice
Thoughts and feelings about an ethnic or racial group, which lead to preconceived notions
Discrimination
Harmful or negative acts against people deemed inferior based on their racial category
Color-blind racism
“ignoring” color rather than taking a neutral approach
- THINK: I don’t see color
What is institutional racism
Institutions that may seem race neutral but disadvantage racialized groups
What is the weathering hypothesis?
Life circumstances that promote or undermine women’s health on a population level in ways that can affect reproduction
Hypersegregation
extreme residential segragation to involve little to no contact
