Prejudice
Prejugement based on attitudes and beliefs. A negative attitude towards an entire group.
Chain immigration
Immigrants sponsor several other immigrants who, on their arrival, may sponsor still more.
Discrimination
The unfair treatment of or denial of rights/privileges/opportunities/ equality to groups or individuals because of prejudice (prejudiced behavior/action)
Sinophobes
People who fear or hate the Chinese or anything related to China.
Stereotypes
Unreliable gross generalizations about all members of a group that do not take individual differences into account.
Institutional discrimination
When an institution (school, hospital, or government) denies equal rights (or discriminates) against a person or group.
Conflict theory
A sociological approach that assumes that the social structure is best understood in terms of conflict or tension between competing groups. Conflict over economics, power, resources, respect. Always a fight between the haves and have boys.
Wealth
All of a person’s material assets, including land and other types of property.
Rrmittances
The monies that immigrants return to their countries of origin.
Fusion
A minority and a majority group combining to form a new group.
Ageism
Prejudice and discrimination against the elderly.
Genocide
The deliberate systematic killing of an entire people or nation.
Affirmative action
Positive efforts to recruit subordinate group members, including women, for jobs, promotions, and educational opportunities.
Glass ceiling
The bar r ire that blocks the promotion of a qualified worker due to gender or race minority membership.
Labeling theory
Helps give a sense of self positive or negative. Used ex: Aunt told her she would grow up to be a teacher or counselor.
Acting white
Taking school seriously and accepting the authority of teachers and administrators.
Familism
Pride and closeness in the family that result in placing family obligation and loyalty before individual needs.
Xenophobia
The fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers.
Dominant
(Majority group) most important, powerful or influential. A majority group that has significantly more control and power over their own lives and the lives of others (as compared to a subordinate group).
Brain drain
The recruitment of skilled workers from foreign countries by the U.S. but are desperately needed in their home countries.
Abolitionists
Whites and free blacks who favored the end of slavery.
Majority
Same as dominant group. Position based on power/economics $. (An ethnic majority describes the numerical dominance of individuals of an ethnic group within the total population of a particular political or geographical entity.
Minority
Is a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their own lives than do the members of the dominant or majority group. Noted by unequal treatment, distinguished physical characteristics, involuntary membership, awareness of subordinate status, in group marriage.
Racial profiling
Practicing law enforcement under the assumption that a person’s skin color or ethnicity is a determining factor for committing criminal acts.
