Racism Vs Antiracism Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is the heart of anti-racist versus racism
Racist people deny that injustices exist and anti-racist people recognize racism in themselves and in systems and try to change it.
What are the basics of anti-racism?
It is to believe that inequities are not caused by the people themselves but the systems and unfair attitudes towards those people
Why is it hard to admit racism
Because people believe racist people are just horrible evil villains instead of the fact that racism is an action that we should be accountable for and apologize for
What is the problem with white privilege?
Part of white privilege is the privilege not to talk important problems, but we need to have these conversations in order to bring change
What is a big policy priority for anti-racism
Widespread good quality Healthcare in both rural communities and larger centers
How should racism be addressed in the workplace?
Many workplaces have diversity statements, but they should be replaced with anti-racism statements that actually take action instead of passively accepting racism
How could black lives matter be made a non-partesian issue?
By arguing back against those who say that it is political because black lives either matter or not, it is not something to do with politics
How should we think about anti-racism?
We should stop worrying so much about always saying the right thing, but instead own up to our mistakes and think more about how we make others feel instead of ourselves
Describe intersectionality
Things like racism and sexism often come together. For example, people assuming black women are not as feminine as white women
How should we address cancel culture?
If we find out that someone has a racist past, if they own up to their mistakes and decide to make it change, we don’t have to cancel them.
How do we keep the conversation Central?
Often when people try to make changes is when they feel bad about the situation. While we can use that, we also need to make sure changes are being made no matter how people feel by implementing anti-racist policies
What are some positives in other countries that contribute to anti-racism
Things like police with no weapons and increase job opportunities and social supports and safety nets that provide more opportunities for people so there is less crime
Describe what it means to say who you are mattered first
In an ideal world, people should be remembered and treated based on who they are, not the color of their skin
What is the current scope of progress
People are starting to call for change and we are beginning to change but we want to get to a point where other cultures can enjoy each other without barriers
What is some hope right now
There is resistance to racism and if we don’t believe that it is possible to achieve these goals then they won’t happen
What is the most important thing to allow?
We want to vote into office the right people, but at the same time we need to improve anti-racism within our current institutions. We need to make it easy for our young swing voters to vote and persuade them to vote for the right party
What is the core value of anti-racism
Love
