Main rules of IRR1999 (2)
“…only in exceptional circumstances should a patient or animal undergoing a diagnostic examination be supported or manipulated by hand”

* Protective equipment must be worn, and no parts of the body will be placed under the primary beam!
Examples of animals that need to be held manually during xrays
- Severely ill/injured animal.
- Congestive heart failure.
- Ruptured diaphragm.
- Any severe traumatic injury!
- Horses

Must hold:
- Diploma in veterinary radiology
- Certificate of competence from an awarding body
Responsabilities of RPA
o Advise on radiation protection
o Demarcation of the controlled area
o Draw up local rules and written systems of work
What is the RPS?
Radiography Protection Supervisor
Who is the RPS?
- Member of the veterinary team, appointed by the practice.
- Routinely a practice principle, senior partner or head veterinary nurse.
Role of the RPS?
To ensure that radiography is carried out in accordance with the regulation and that local rules are being followed
Local rules & written systems of work
- Written up by RPA
- Everyone needs to read a copy and sign
- Has list of everyone allowed to be involved in xrays
- Has info on equipment, procedures, & restrictions of access to controlled area
- Has list of actions to be followed
- Needs displaying in xray room
