1
Q

What is chinook

A

Dry, warm wind found on the leeward (east) side of the Rocky Mountains (between BC and Alberta)

Caused by loss of moisture in the air due to orographic precipitation

Q

What is the core and it’s two parts?

A

Inner core

  • about 1400km from the centre out
  • solid nickel and iron
  • high pressure and temp 10000 degrees c

Outer core

  • 2000-2400km thick
  • liquid composed of mostly iron
  • temp 2000-6500 degrees

Q

The inner mantle

A
  • Also called the mesosphere
  • 1900km thick
  • gets increasingly rigid outwards
  • composed of silicon, manganese and iron oxides

Q

Outer mantle

A
  • 900km thick
  • semi plastic
  • bottom portion called the asthenosphere
  • source of lava and magma coming to the surface
  • contains “mohorovicic break” which is the area between mantle and crust

Q

Oceanic crust

A
  • 7-10km thick
  • Age of less than 200 million years
  • Composed of silica (sand), iron and magnesium
  • referred to as “SIMA”

Q

Karst topography

A

Areas of the world with feature defined by the erosion of limestone bedrock

  • the erosion of limestone by water occurs through a basic chemical reaction
  • water and limestone for a mild acid that erodes limestone which is chemical weathering

16
Q

Glacier features (tarn)

A

Small lake found within a cirque

17
Q

Moraines

A

Deposits of material picked up and carried by ice then deposited
Material is know as till

  • lateral- alongside the glacier
  • terminal is at the end
18
Q

Continental glacier features (erratic)

A

Boulders lifted by ice

19
Q

Continental glacier features (Drumlins)

A

Small hills of sediment formed from ice re-advancing over at existing Moraine. Tell is deposited as glaciers cannot carry that much settlement/material

20
Q

Continental glacier features (striations)

A

Scraping in rocks surface

21
Q

Continental glacier feature (kettle lakes)

A

Small lakes left when large chunks of ice break off and melt

22
Q

Continental glacier features (esker)

A

remnant I’d under-glacier stream

23
Q

Continental glacier features ( outwash plain)

A

Silly and till at the foot of a glacier
