What do they argue in their study?
Argue that the nuclear family was no longer the main family type in the UK.
What were their 5 reasons for the decrease in the nuclear family?
Organisational diversity, cultural diversity, social class diversity, life cycle diversity, family life course diversity
What is meant by organisational diversity?
The internal division of domestic labour
What is meant by cultural diversity?
Beliefs and values brought by migrant families, eg. religion can alter how they think about the family
What is meant by social class diversity?
Say social class affects how family operates, instability in lower class families from not as good education. But upper+middle class have ‘trad’ values = normal family organisation.
What is meant by life cycle diversity?
Period of time affects the family type. For example war increases single-parent households and stigmas to marriages/divorces change.
What is meant by family life course diversity?
Things in the families change the priorities. Like priorities on a baby to the child leaving causing an empty nest.
