Rate of Hydrolysis (substitution) Flashcards

(6 cards)

1
Q

What is the Method of testing for rate of substitution

A

1) Place measured sample of each halogenalkane (in equal molar amounts) into test tubes and place in water bath at 50°C

2.) Into another test tube place a solution of ethanol, water and aqueous silver nitrate and place in same water bath.

3.) Once both at same temperature add equal volume of ethanol mixture and haloalkane solutions together.

4.) Time how long precipitate takes to form

Q

Why does the rate of hydrolysis (substitution) differ between halogens

A

As bond enthalpy decreases the energy required to break bond decreases which means the rate of hydrolysis increases
