Rates - How Fast Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the factors that affect the rate of reaction
temperature, concentration, surface area and the presence of a catalyst.
What is the collision theory
for particles to react. They have to collide with each other with sufficient energy which is called the activation energy.
What is activation energy
Activation energy is the minimum amount of energy particles need to overcome for a chemical reaction to take place.
What is the rate of reaction depended on
It is determined by the frequency of successful collisions.
How does heat increase the rate of reaction
When particles heat up they have more energy wich causes more succesfull collision.
How does surface area increase the rate of reaction
there is a greater chance of particles colliding, which leads to more successful collisions per second. the rate of reaction increases.
How does a catalyst increase the rate of reaction
A catalyst helps the particles overcome the activation energy therefore increaseing the rate of reaction.
How does concentration increase the rate of reaction
If the concentration of reactants is increased, there are more reactant particles moving together. There will be more collisions and so the reaction rate is increased.
What is the equation for calculating the rate of reaction
Mean rate = change in quantity of product or reactant / time taken
What is the unit for change of mass for a rate of reaction
g/s
What is the unit for rate of a reaction involving a change in volume
cm3/s
