Rates Of Reaction 1.1 Flashcards
(12 cards)
How to find the speed of reaction
Can be found by measuring how fast the product is made or how fast the reactants are used up
What are the variable which affect speed of reaction
Particle size
Concentration
Temperature
Catalyst
How to make any investigation fair?
-Only one variable can be changed at a time
Affect of particle size on reaction
- The smaller the particle size, the larger the surface area, therefore the faster the reaction reaction time.
- Breaking a down a lump into smaller pieces exposes extra surface area, and now more particles are available for colliding and reacting
- Decreasing the particle size increases the surface area and, therefore, increases the rate of reaction
What is concentration measure in
Moles per litre(mol l^-1)
Affect of concentration on reaction
The higher the concentration, the more particles there are to collide and, therefore, the faster the reaction
Affect of temperature on reaction
- When temperature is increases in a chemical reaction the particles start to move faster
- As chemicals are heated this increases the speed of the particles and they are more likely to collide with each other
Describe the catalyst
A catalyst is a substance which can speed up the rate of reaction without, itself, being changed or used up
Describe the slope
The steeper the slope on the graph, the faster the reaction. A steeper slope shows that a greater volume of gas is produced in a shorter time
Effect of changing mass of chemicals
Changing the mass of chemicals does not change the speed of the reaction, but does change the final volume of gas produced
How to monitor the progress of a reaction
Check jotter
How to calculate the average rate of a reaction
change in quantity
Average Rate=_______________
change in time
