Q

Collision theory

A

Reactions can only happen when the reactant particles collide. Most collisions aren’t successful in forming product molecules despite the high rate of collisions.

Q

Reason as to why most collisions are unsuccessful

A

Particles have a wide range of kinetic energy BUT only a small fraction of particles have enough kinetic energy to break the original bonds and form new ones.

Q

What are ‘fruitful collisions’?

A

The minority high kinetic energy collisions between particles which do not produce a chemical change.

7
Q

How does the size of particles effect the rate of reaction?

A

Smaller particles have a larger surface area for collisions to occur, therefore have a faster rate of reaction.

8
Q

Effect of using a catalyst in a reaction

A

They help break chemical bonds in reactant molecules and provide a ‘different pathway’ for the reaction. Basically activation energy is reduced.

Q

Measure the rate of reaction?

A

Gas syringe and beaker containing liquid and reactants. Measure how much gas is produced in a specific amount of time.
