Extended Metaphor
A metaphor drawn out into an entire poem, stanza or paragraph using multiple comparisons.
Metaphor
Compares two different things using the word IS not like or as.
Metonymy
A figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for another which it is closely associated to.
Ex. The White House announced today.. The president announced today
Mood/ Atmosphere
The feeling created by the text in the reader.
Oxymoron
A figure of speech where the author puts together words of contradictory to create emphasis on the phrase.
Ex. Jumbo shrimp, cruel kindness
Paradox
A statement that appears to be self contradictory, foolish or false but actually contains deeper truth.
Ex. Macbeths “fair is foul and foul is fair” & “the rich are poor and the poor are rich”
Parallelism
To give two or more parts of the sentences a similar form in order to give the whole a pattern. Adds rhythm, emphasis and organization.
Ex. Dickens “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness.
Parody
A work that closely imitates the style or contet of another work with the specific aim of comic effect and ridicule.
Personification
A figure of speech inanimate/ nonhuman things are given human emotions or qualities.
Ex. The moon smiled
Point of view
The perspective from which the story is told. First person, second person or third person
Prose
One of the major divisions of genre. Anything that isn’t poetry or drama is prose.
