Synagogue
A synagogue is a house of prayer for jews, it is where they pray, hold services
Minyan
It is the minimum number of people that need to be present for the daily prayers to be valid ( males in an orthodox synagogue )
Menorah
The menorah is the seven-lamp ancient Hebrew lamp stand made of pure gold
Chanukah
Chanukah is the 8 day celebration also known as Hanukah. This commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. when jews rose up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors
Star of David
The star of David is the symbol of Judaism
Torah scrolls
The torah is the first five books of the jewish bible and is read with a yad as it cannot be touched
Beit K’nesset
The biet k’nesset means the house of assembly
Shul
The shul is the synagogue
Bimah
The bimah is a platform in the middle of the synagogue it is where the torah is read using a yad
Aron hakodesh ( the ark )
The ark is where the torah is kept. It is decorated to show its importance
Ner tamid
It is a light that is kept burning to show that God is always there and always with you
Cantor ( chazzan )
The chazzan is the jewish musician or precentor who trained in the vocal arts who lead teh congregation in songful prayer
Tallit
The tallit is a prayer shaul
Tefillin
A teffilin is a black box that contains a quote of the torah so that is is with the jews when they pray. It would be attached to there head of left arm
Tzitzit
These are the prayer notes at the end of the prayer shaul. There a 613 of them on for each on the mitzvah
Amidah
The amidah is the name for the daily prayer in the sunagouge ( standing prays in english )
Shema
“Hear o Israel, the lord your God is one, and you shall love the lord your God with all of your heart, your soul and your might”
Shabbat
This is the jewish day of rest on the seventh day of the week
Kiddush
The kiddush cup is used to drink the wine
Shabbat services
They do not work, cook, or use electronics or work unless it involves peaku nefesh
Challah bread
The challah bread is a braided bread typically eaten on ceremonial occasions such as the shabbat
Mezuzah
The mezuzah is a box attached to the doorframe at home containing a section/quote from the torah
Tenakh
This is the Hebrew bible
Nevi’im
This is the second main part of the torah
