RE Revision Flashcards
(18 cards)
fact
Something true and proven. Not open to interpretation
opinion
Is a judgment based on facts. A person’s opinion is an attempt to draw a
conclusion from factual evidence
belief
A strong idea on how things should be/are.
a priori
When the thinking starts
inside our mind
a posteriori
When the thinking starts
based on the world
Inductive arguments
In induction, we find a general rule from looking at
lots of examples
deductive arguments
In deduction we apply a rule to a
particular event/thing
how to destroy inductive arguments
- We could show that one or more
premises aren’t true - We could show that the conclusion
doesn’t follow from the premises - We could point out that there is a
chance of more evidence proving the
premises wrong - We could point out that even if the
premises are true, and the conclusion
follows logically, there is still a chance that
we could make a different conclusion
how to destroy deductive arguments
i) One of the premises is untrue
e.g. Premise 2: “My pet “Arthur” is actually a
budgie!”
This means the conclusion isn’t true
ii) The conclusion doesn’t actually follow on
from the premises
Premise 1: The word ‘dog’ means ‘canine’
Premise 2: My pet “Arthur” is a dog
Therefore
Conclusion “My pet “Arthur” is very kind”
There’s nothing in the argument to
support that conclusion!
cosmological arguments
Aquinas’ Cosmological argument is an a posteriori, inductive
argument that attempts to prove the existence of God.
Cosmological arguments focus on cause and effect to explain
how and why the world exists
“The Cosmological Argument Proves the
Existence of God” —- AGREE
Only thing powerful enough to be
the first cause outside the universe
would be God
We experience cause and effect
“The Cosmological Argument Proves the
Existence of God” —- DISAGREE
It could be possible that the universe
doesn’t need to have been caused
Universe could be eternal
” The Natural World proves God
exists” —- AGREE
True to say that if something
is designed it must have had a
designer
” The Natural World proves God
exists” —- DISAGREE
Charles Darwin’s theory of
evolution suggests that
humans weren’t designed
(just appear that way)
THE PROBLEM OF EVIL
God is omnibenevolent (all loving)
God is omnipotent (all powerful)
God is omniscient (all knowing)
BUT Evil and suffering exists
Theodicies
Theodicies are arguments that
try to prove that God can exist
alongside evil and suffering
the trinity
God the Father
God the Son (Jesus)
God the Holy Spirit
role of Churches
Churches are Holy Buildings for Christians as they provide a space for the
Christian community to gather together and worship God as a community.
