lots of examples

Q

how to destroy inductive arguments

A
  1. We could show that one or more
    premises aren’t true
  2. We could show that the conclusion
    doesn’t follow from the premises
  3. We could point out that there is a
chance of more evidence proving the
    premises wrong
  4. We could point out that even if the
premises are true, and the conclusion
follows logically, there is still a chance that
we could make a different conclusion

Q

how to destroy deductive arguments

A

i) One of the premises is untrue

e.g. Premise 2: “My pet “Arthur” is actually a
budgie!”

This means the conclusion isn’t true

ii) The conclusion doesn’t actually follow on
from the premises

Premise 1: The word ‘dog’ means ‘canine’

Premise 2: My pet “Arthur” is a dog

Therefore

Conclusion “My pet “Arthur” is very kind”

There’s nothing in the argument to
support that conclusion!

Q

cosmological arguments

A

Aquinas’ Cosmological argument is an a posteriori, inductive
argument that attempts to prove the existence of God.

Cosmological arguments focus on cause and effect to explain
how and why the world exists

Q

“The Cosmological Argument Proves the
Existence of God” —- AGREE

A

Only thing powerful enough to be
the first cause outside the universe
would be God

We experience cause and effect

Q

Existence of God” —- DISAGREE

A

It could be possible that the universe
doesn’t need to have been caused

Universe could be eternal
