What is Justice?
Justice means fairness and equality; conflict may be caused by injustice.

Peace is to live in harmony and without fear. God desires peace, justice, and freedom.

Forgiveness is showing compassion and mercy, pardoning someone for their actions.

Reconciliation is making up between two groups after a disagreement or conflict.
What are some initial reasons for war?
Initial reasons for war include greed, retaliation, and self-defence.
What does greed in the context of war refer to?
Greed for land, wealth, or power can lead a country to challenge and invade a weaker country.
What is self-defence in the context of war?
Self-defence is usually considered a morally acceptable reason to go to war.
What is the ‘Just War’ Theory?
The ‘Just War’ Theory provides a set of criteria for justifying war.
What is the first criterion of the Just War Theory?
Just Cause: self-defence or defending another, not for profit.
Who must declare a Just War?
A Just War must be declared by the Correct Authority, such as a government.
What is the intention behind a Just War?
The intention must be promoting good and defeating evil or injustice.
What does ‘Last Resort’ mean in Just War Theory?
The conflict should only occur if all other pathways to peace are exhausted.
What is meant by a reasonable chance of success in Just War Theory?
It is unjust to ask people to fight a war if it is probable that the war will not be won.
What does proportionality mean in Just War Theory?
The methods of warfare must be proportional, and excessive force should not be used.
What is a Holy War?
A Holy War is waged to support a religious cause.
What is the stance of Christianity on Holy War?
In Christianity, a Holy War must be authorized by a religious leader.
What is the Jewish perspective on war?
War is justified in self-defence but is always regrettable.

Milchemet mitzvah (defence of faith) and Milchemet Reshut (optional).
What is Milchemet mitzvah?
Milchemet mitzvah is when the enemy attacked you first (self-defence) or to avoid being attacked.
What is Milchemet Reshut?
Milchemet Reshut is when an issue can’t be resolved peacefully or if there is good reason.
What do religions generally say about violence?
No religion promotes violence and generally agrees that violence should be avoided.
What is an example of non-violent protest?
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work during the Civil Rights movement is an example.
What does Christianity teach about non-violence?
Christianity teaches non-violence, as seen in Jesus’ teachings.
What is terrorism?
Terrorism is an act designed to spread fear to accomplish political or social goals.
