Reactions in aqueous solutions Flashcards
(9 cards)
Dissociation
The splitting of ionic compounds into its ions
Dissolution
The process where ionic crystals break up into ions in water
Ionisation
The reaction of a molecular substance with water to produce ions
Hydration
The process where ions become surrounded with water molecules
Cations
Positively charged ions (e.g. Na^+, Mg^2+, Al^3+, NH4^+,
etc.
Anions
Negatively charged ions (e.g. Cl^-, S^2-, O^2-, NO3^-, SO4^2-, etc.
Electrolyte
A substance that contains free ions and behaves as an electrically conductive medium
Precipitate
The solid that forms in a solution during a chemical reaction
Ion exchange reaction
A type of reaction where the positive ions exchange their respective negative ions due to a driving force
