Reactions of Acids Flashcards
(36 cards)
What are acids?
Compounds that release H⁺ ions when dissolved in water.
What are alkalis?
Compounds that release OH⁻ ions when dissolved in water.
What pH is considered acidic?
Less than 7
What pH is considered alkaline?
Over 7
What pH is considered neutral?
7
What does the pH scale show?
The amount of H⁺ ions in the solution. The more H⁺ ions -> the more acidic/lower the pH.
What is an increase of 1 on the pH scale equal to?
A decrease of 10x the number of H⁺ ions in the solution
Name 2 indicators.
- Universal indicator
- Electronic pH probes
What is a strong acid?
Acids that become fully ionised in solution - every molecule splits up into ions
What is a weak acid?
Acids that become partially ionised in solution - only a percentage of their molecules split up into ions
What does concentration tell us?
How much of a substance is dissolved in water
What will a concentrated strong acid look like in water?
Lots of acid ions, completely ionised
What will a dilute strong acid look like in water?
Few acid ions, completely ionised
What will a dilute weak acid look like in water?
Few acid ions, partially ionised.
What will a concentrated weak acid look like in water?
Lots of acid ions, partially ionised
What is a salt?
A compound where the hydrogen feom an acid is replaced by a metal
When are salts formed?
When acids react with metals or metal compounds
What are the main 3 acids?
Sulfuric, nitric, hydrochloric
What type of salt is formed in reactions between metals and hydrochloric acid?
Metal chloride
What type of salt is formed in reactions between metals and sulfuric acid?
Metal sulfate
What type of salt is formed in reactions between metals and nitric acid?
Metal nitrate
What ions are formed in reactions between metals and hydrochloric acid?
H⁺, Cl⁻
What ions are formed in reactions between metals and sulfuric acid?
2H⁺, SO₄²⁻
What ions are formed in reactions between metals and nitric acid?
H⁺, NO₃⁻
