Reactions of acids and bases Flashcards
(7 cards)
General equation for reactions
Metal + acid -> ionic salt + hydrogen gas
Metal carbonate reaction equation
Acid + metal carbonate –> ionic salt + CO2 + H2O
What is a metal carbonate reaction?
Contains metal cations and carbonate ions, where bases react with acids. When added to water, soluble will dissociate into cations and carbonate ions. Insoluble carbonates will remain solid when added to water
Metal hydrogencarbonate (bicarbonate) reaction
Acid + metal hydrogencarbonate –> ionic salt + CO2 + H2O
Metal hydroxide reaction equation
Acid + Metal hydroxide -> ionic salt + H2O
Neutralisation reaction equation
Acid and base remove each other from solution and form water
Acid + Metal hydroxide -> ionic salt + H2O
What are antacids?
Weak bases that neutralise the effect of excess stomach acid (HCl)
