A

Georgia:
⁃ threatened by anti slave states, feel hate has been directed towards them
⁃ People of Georgia don’t want to be ruled, northern states have taken over with their will
⁃ Republicans are anti slavery “proof that Georgia is being attacked”
⁃ “North doesn’t need slaves for money bc they rely on the govt, so it would only hurt the south”
⁃ Didn’t get half of the new land with Mexico or even amount of slave states even tho the south fought
⁃ Ordinance of 1787 allowed everyone to settle land with slaves or without, but in 1820 the north tries to change that and pisses Georgia off

Mississippi

A

Mississippi:
⁃ slavery is the “greatest material interest of the world” and they need them for tropical harvesting bc “none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun”
⁃ Also cites the ordinance of 1787 and of 1820 when the south didn’t get half of France’s territory
⁃ Nullified the fugitive slave law also pissed them off
⁃ “Doesn’t support the slave, only destroys his present condition with no better”

South Carolina:
⁃ “FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES”
⁃ Quotes more of the Declaration of indp. And that they should be able to abolish an unjust and destructive govt
⁃ Articles of confederation
⁃ 14 states are not fulfilling their constitutional obligations
⁃ Compact has been broken by non slave states for refusing to transit or give up slaves to the south
⁃ Making slaves citizens unconstitutional

Texas:
⁃ upset that the us has stopped admitted slave states so that there’s a non slave majority
⁃ Says the govt doesn’t protect them from natives “Indian savages” or Mexican bandits, nor do they reimburse them for damages (…)
⁃ Northern states have violated the fugitive slave clause
⁃ Anti slave fines in the north are unconstitutional
⁃ Abolitionist “spread hatred between slave and non slave holding states”
⁃ They say that they the Minority of slave states in congress was on purpose to impose legislation
⁃ “Invaded the south and murdered slaveowners for “exercising their rights” “
⁃ Voted in an “abolitionist” pres (Abe Lincoln wasn’t an abolitionist”
⁃ US made for white people and Africans have no place amoung them other than as slaves

  • First political campaign in US history: 1828 dirtiest campaign in US history, but andrew jackson was elected president
    • turbulent presidency due to rachels death
    • Slave holders becoming a minority
    • Cherokees Take TJ’s advice and embrace white mans way of life but Cherokee families forced out of their land/Indian removal (Supreme Court ruled in their favor but Jackson told everyone to ignore verdict)
    • Wanted to be known as Great White Father but they call him the devil
