real up and atom Flashcards
(80 cards)
Atoms
Atoms are the building blocks for all life. They are found in everything and everywhere.
Electrons
negatively charged particles which rotate around the outside of a nucleus.
equal to the number of protons within the nucleus, unless, it’s an ion.
Electronic shell
holds electrons in place around the nucleus and shows how they are organised.
Nucleus
Contains subatomic particles called
Protons
positively charged particles.
identify the atomic number of the atom.
protons also determines where on the periodic table they appear.
inside the atoms nucleus
Neutrons
o no charge
o always equal to the number of protons, unless it’s an Isotope.
o
Atomic Mass – Atomic Number = Number of Neutrons
o within the atom’s nucleus
Atomic Symbol
o This is a letter of the alphabet to identify the element. It can also be a combination of letters to indicate the element also.
Atomic Number
o Is the number of protons of the atom.
o It is also used by scientists to identify where on the period table it belongs.
o It remains the same, even if the element / atom is an Isotope
o Can be written on the top or bottom of Icon.
o Is always the Smallest one.
