How were Scots forced out of the Highlands?

A

Most people living in the highlands were farmers who were living on rented land. Eventually overpopulation led to many Scots land become too small, so landowners kicked them off becuase they couldn’t pay rent and so that they could use the land for sheep farming and hunting, something more profitable.

Why was farming a reason many left the highlands?

A

Farming in the highalnds was very difficult. This was because the soil was rough and stoney and the harsh climate meant that the growing season for crops was very short, meaning less of a profit. The Outdated farming equipment also contributed to farmers leaving. For example, the Cas Chrom.

Jobs were very hard to come by in the highlands due to the lack of industry, unlike the lowlands. For example, some people worked collecting kelp. This payed little and when cheaper forgein kelp became available, workers lost their jobs.

Why were housing conditions a reason to leave the Highlands?

A

Poverty was a major problem in the highlands. The low incomes meant many people had poor health because of a lack of food and poor living condiions because of poor hosuing. For example, many Highland Scots lived in Blackhouses, in which they often shared with animals and had no toilets.

How did the Russian Revolution affect the Highlands?

A

The fishing industry was a big provider of employment in the highlands, as many were hired to catch and process fish, but when this industry slowed down during the Russian Revolution, jobs were lost. For example, during the revolution and changing tastes, meant less people wasted herring, causing Job losses.
