Reasons why people continue to live in areas at risk from a tectonic hazard Flashcards
(5 cards)
How many people chose to live in seismically active areas in 2015?
2.7 billion people
Around how many people live near one of the world’s most active volcanos?
400 million people
Why do people choose to live in areas at risk to tectonic hazards?
- They can earn a living (e.g tourism, farming, geothermal energy)
- some people can’t afford to move
- They feel emotionally attached to the place
- They study tectonic activity
How are volcanic eruptions beneficial to agriculture?
Volcanoes erupt and produce ash and other material that is mineral-rich. This accumulates at the base. These mix with the soil, making it more fertile, so good for growing crops. This provides a source of income for people in those areas as people can make lots of money buying and selling crops.
Examples of countries using tectonic hazards
Iceland and New Zealand use geothermal energy for electricity. Hot springs are a popular tourist attraction.
Central and South America volcanoes used to grow crops such as cotton and coffee in mineral-rich soil
