REBT Flashcards

1
Q

What are the three ‘main insights’ of REBT?

A
  1. You mainly create your own emotional disturbances by the irrational beliefs you tell yourself
  2. No matter when you started to disturb yourself, if you are upset today, you are still believing some dogmatic irrational beliefs
  3. To eliminate your anxiety, loneliness, depression and rage, there is no way but work and practice, yes work and practice

Q

What are the ABC(DE)s in rational emotive behaviour therapy?

A
  • A = Activating Event
  • B = Beliefs. Beliefs exist at three levels:
    • Assessment: how the event is interpreted e.g. I’ve lost the use of my left side
    • Expectations: how things ought to be e.g. I should be able to use my left side
    • Evaluations: what the event means e.g. I’m useless/can’t stand it/it’s awful
  • C = Emotional Consequence
  • D = Dispute
  • E = New emotional effect
