rechargeable cells and batteries Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Primary cells
A
-cannot be recharged
-go flat when chemical reaction reaches equillibrium
2
Q
Secondary cells
A
-can be recharged and reused several times
-to recharge, the cell reaction must occur in reverse
-done by connecting the cell to a charger that provides a greater potential difference than what is produced during discharge
3
Q
For a cell to be recharged…
A
the products produced during discharge MUST be in contact with the electrode
4
Q
Discharge
A
-galvanic cell
-spontaneous
-negative terminal is anode
chemical -> electrical
-electrons leave the cell at negative terminal
5
Q
Recharge
A
-electrolytic cell
-non spontaneous
-positive electrode is anode
electrical -> chemical
