What is Sharecropping?

A

A rented piece of land is shared between the owner and the worker. The worker spends all their money on the land and, as a result, owes the owner money for all the miscellaneous items. In the end, they owe more than they earn, and this is compounded by a law that prohibits workers from leaving their employers if they owe them money.
