What problems faced the nation after the Civil War?
Cities and plantations destroyed
2/3 of the railroads destroyed
No land, no job, no education
Confederate money becomes worthless
What was Lincoln’s ten percent plan?
The goal was to quickly reunite the union.
Only 10% of a state’s voters had to swear an oath of loyalty towards the union.
What is amnesty?
forgiveness of any crime committed
What was the Wade Davis Bill
Majority of white males would have to sign a loyalty oath before a state could return to the Union. Only those men could vote for delegates to write a new state Constitution.
Former Confederates could not hold office.
The Freedmen’s Bureau
provided emergency relief, set up schools, helped find jobs, and resolved disputes for the blacks.
Describe Lincoln’s Murder
It was April 14th 1865, at Ford’s theatre in Washington D.C.
John Wilkes Booth was the assassin.
Radical Republicans
The people who wanted African Americans to have as many rights as the whites. They went to extreme measures to make that happen. The Radical Republicans wants to protect the african americans and did not want the confederates to be a part of the government.
The Civil Rights Act of 1866
granting citizenship rights to African Americans and guaranteeing the civil rights of all people (except Native Americans).

all people born or naturalized in the United States are citizens.

Describe the Radical Republicans’ Reconstruction Act of 1867.
divide south into 5 military districts with a general in charge of each one. New state constitution written. 13th and 14th amendment
Who did southerners refer to as scalawags?
White southerners who supported the Union
Who were the carpetbaggers?
Northerners who moved to the South after the Civil War, during Reconstruction
Who were the Ku Klux Klan (KKK)?
A secret society who would go around terrorising the freedmen because they felt like they are worthless
What was sharecropping?
Helps to replace slavery. Sharecroppers rent land from landowners for a trade of some of the crops that they farm
Civil War hero Ulysses S. Grant became President in 1868. He served for 2 terms, but problems arose during his time in office. Name two problems that occurred while Grant was in office.
Scandal and corruption plagued Grant’s presidency, and a severe economic depression began during his second term.

How does the election of 1876 lead to the end of Reconstruction?
Hayes agrees to end Reconstruction in exchange for 20 disputed electoral votes from 3 southern states.
What were poll taxes?
taxes put on everyone who voted
What were literacy tests?
a test to see if the person meets the literacy requirements for voting
