Redemption Paper 1 Flashcards
(24 cards)
How do churches inspire worship
The devotion that was put in to building a beautiful church can show respect to God and inspire prayer
Images of the cross are a constant reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice
There are side chapels that allow people go for privacy when praying
Churches before and after 65
Before-churches would face towards Jeurusalem
The building was shaped like a cross to remid us of Jesus
Mass was spoken in latin despite the native language and the priest had their back to the congregation. Those who were present did not feel involved in the mass
After-built to ensure that many people could see what was going on . The alter was built in the centre of the church or a place more accessible to the congregation to make them feel more involved
Lectern
The reading stand where the bible is eead
Altar
The place of sacrifice where the bread and wine are transformed to the body and blood . The most important part of the mass
Tabernacle
The box where the consecrated bread is kept after mass
Crucifix
The decoration reminds us of Gods sacrifice
It inspires gratitude and aids the congregation in their prayer
Free will and sin
God made all of creation perfect . He gave us free will. God wants us all to choose him instead of force us .
Humans can use their free will in anyway they want . Christians use their free will to please God but we all make mistakes .
Sin separates us from God . We were all built with tendency to commit sin (original sin )
That is why he sent his son down to repair the relationship and beat sin and death
Death
Resurrection
Ascension
Death-We believe that despite being human Jesus did follow God with upmost obedience , this obedience is shown through Jesus’ commitment despite being in traumatic pain
Resurrection-Because Jesus fulfilled Gods command he defeated death and therefore was able to come back. As a result of his resurrection the gates of heaven were open finally to all people
Jesus’ ascension . After his resurrection Jesus rose to be next to his father restoring cosmic order.
Jesus resurrection quote
If christ had not been raised , your faith is futile and you are still in your sins
Salvation
Past- People believed that once Jesus rose he had finally brought salvation and nothing else is needed to save humanity
Present- many believe that salvation is ongoing . Whilst Jesus defeated the ultimate power of sin doesn’t mean it stops existing . People still have to accept God and therefore achieve salvation for themselves.
Future-when the kingdom of God is fully established at the end of time sim and death will have finished . All who accepted God will be able to enjoy freedom in heaven . This is the final victory of Gods grace
Redemption and salvation in the mass
Christs offering is reenacted allowing us to be apart of the moment .
By receiving communion they are offering themselves up to God by full accepting Jesus.
Christ enters their lives giving them strength over temptation
Jesus as the…
Example-Jesus was aware all the pain he would go through yet he still did it showing total obedience to God
Restorer-Jesus restores the relationship between God and all humans bu destroying all sun
Victor-Jesus was victorious over death and death . He made it possible for all people to go to heaven
All comes from mark
Coming of the holy spirit
Just before rising to heaven Jesus promised his disciples that he would return to complete redemption of all peoples
50 days after his resurrection the followers of Jesus were granted powers of speech by the holy spirit . The spirit continues to this day all of Jesus’ acts
Tree of the cross
St Irenaus sees the cross as the ending of the Genesis story (kinda)
Adam and Eve took from the tree of knowledge disobeying God
To fix this Jesus obeyed God and sacrificed himself paying the price of that sin.
St anslem
Tells us that Jesus ransomed our freedom .
He traded his life so that we could be free of death and sin
Conscience
It is Gods voice speaking in the heart of the person guiding them to the correct path
“There he is alone with God”
Sides to conscience
Natural-we are taught that all humans are born with the understanding of right and wrong helping us to choose Good from Evil
However conscience must be educated and developed . We must pay attention to christian teachings so that we can be in full contact with God. We know this as humans can only make the right decision when they have all the information
“Reason should not be set in opposition to the moral law of the magisterium”
Events of mass
Start-catholics come together to share in the sacrifice of Christ
Readings-reminds us that God has guided people throughout history
Offertory-a sign of gratitude to God
Consecration-pinnacle of mass . The bread becomes Jesus . The command “do this in memory of me “ is fulfilled every time showing our obedience to God
End of mass-we leave to go out and spread the word of God
Mass is the source and summit
The offering of christ is the highest form of prayer for a christian . We re-enact this every time
It is the source as all who go are filled with Jesus through the communion
Different understandings of the Eucharist
Orthodox- the ceremony takes place behind a screen separating the congregation due to it’s holiness
Anglican-christ becomes the the bread and wine . Meaning he is present in the community when they attend church
Quakers-eucharist is not celebrated , they believe christ is present anyway and inspires the prayers
Nonconformists-the eucharist is a memorial of the last supper . Christ is only present in particular readings
Words of institution
When these words are said they become the body and blood
By eating the body the people share in its redeeming effects
Agnus Dei
The prayer shortly after communion referring to the Jews escape from Egypt.
This tells us that Christ is the new lamb sacrificed to God for all our sakes
“Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world”
Benediction
Where the consecration is put on display so that all peoples can show their respects
Eucharistic adoration
The people praise the body and blood as it is Jesus meaning it must be tested with reverence and respect
