Redox Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Oxidising agent
A
Something that causes oxidation by reduction (gaining electrons)
2
Q
Reducing agent
A
Something that causes reduction by oxidising itself (losing electrons)
3
Q
Oxidation number
A
Oxidation numbers are assigned to atoms/ions to indicate the extent to which they are oxidised or reduced
4
Q
Oxidation number exceptions
A
- H is usually +1 BUT -1 when bonded to a metal as a hydride
- O is usually -2 BUT -1 when present as a peroxide (eg H2O2)
5
Q
Balancing redox equations in acidic conditions (H2O and H+ available)
A
- Balance the species reacting
- Add water to balance oxygen
- Add H+ to balance hydrogen
- Add electrons to balance charge
