Redox Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is meant by the term oxidation
Loss of electrons
What is meant by the term reductions
Gain of electrons
What is an oxidising agent
An electron acceptor which mean itself is reduced
What is a reducing agent
An electron donor which means itself is oxidised
If metals elements have low electrochemical values what does this cause
They tend to lose E
This is an oxidation reaction
As oxidation reactions are donating electrons what does this make them
Good reducing agents
Most effective reducing agents
Group 1 metals found on the top right of the electrochemical series
LITHIUM REDUCING AGENT BEEEEST
If non metals have high electro negativity values what does this mean
They tend to gain electrons to form negative ions. This is a reduction reaction
What does reduction make elements?
Effective oxidising agents
Group 7 are best at oxidising agents and found at bottom left of electrochemical series
FLORUONE EFFECTIVE OX AGENT
Compounds can also be good oxi/red agents
Hydrogen peroxide-stronger OX agent
Carbon monoxide- string reducing agent
Oxidising agents compounds
Hydrogen peroxide
Acidified potassium permanganate ions
Acidified dichromate ions
Reducing agents compounds
Carbon monoxide
Sulfite ions solutions
Uses of oxidising agents
Killing fungi and bacteria
Use of sterilisers
To treats athletes foots
To extend shell life of fruit flowers and veg
To bleach clothes and hair
Compounds pt2
For some ionic compounds it’s the ions within then that are
Oxidising or reducing agents, this can include group ions
Group ions used and where found
Permanganate and dichromate at bottom left
What does this make them
Good oxidising agents
These ions are only affective on acidic solutions, why?
There are H+ ions
What should you do add to acidify a solution
Add an acid to the reaction usually sulphuric acid
