REDOX Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is the KOHES mnemonic used for?
To remember the order in balancing half equations: K (K atoms)
What is oxidation in terms of oxygen?
Gain of oxygen.
What is reduction in terms of oxygen?
Loss of oxygen.
What is oxidation in terms of electrons?
Loss of electrons (OIL - Oxidation Is Loss).
What is reduction in terms of electrons?
Gain of electrons (RIG - Reduction Is Gain).
What is a redox reaction?
A reaction where both oxidation and reduction occur.
What is a reducing agent?
A substance that donates electrons and is oxidised.
What is an oxidising agent?
A substance that accepts electrons and is reduced.
What is the oxidation state of an uncombined element?
0
What is the oxidation state of a simple ion?
Equal to its charge.
What is the oxidation state of oxygen in most compounds?
–2 (except in peroxides -1
What is the oxidation state of hydrogen in most compounds?
+1 (except in metal hydrides -1).
What is the oxidation state of fluorine in compounds?
–1 (always).
What is the oxidation state of chlorine in compounds?
Usually –1
What is the sum of oxidation states in a neutral compound?
0
What is the sum of oxidation states in a polyatomic ion?
Equal to the ion’s overall charge.
How can oxidation states be used to identify redox reactions?
If oxidation state increases → oxidation; if it decreases → reduction.
What is disproportionation?
A redox reaction where the same species is both oxidised and reduced.
Give an example of disproportionation involving chlorine and water.
Cl₂ + H₂O → HCl + HClO
What is a half equation?
An equation showing either the oxidation or reduction half of a redox reaction
What are the steps to balance a half equation in acidic solution?
Balance atoms other than O and H
Write the half equation for reduction of permanganate ion in acid.
MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O
Write the half equation for oxidation of iron(II) ion.
Fe²⁺ → Fe³⁺ + e⁻
