Q

Are group 2 metals reducing agents or oxidising agents?

A

Reducing agents

because they LOSE electrons and are oxidised, their electrons are transferred to the other species which is reduced as it GAINS the electrons

Q

Write the half equation of the reduction of a group 2 metal (give the metal as X)

A

X → X2+ + 2e-

with oxidation, it is LOSING electrons, so it begins as an element on its own on the left and then on the right the electrons are like EXPELLED from it to show they ahve been REMOVED from the elment to form the 2+ ion!!!

Q

Explain the trend in reactivity of group 2 metals in terms of first and second ionisation energy

A
  1. As you go down group 2, the first and second ionisation energies decrease
  2. This is because the atomic radius increases going down the group
  3. The number of inner electrons shells increases which increases the electron shielding
  4. These decrease the nuclear force of attraction between the positively charged nucleus and the outershell electrons
  5. This means the first and second ionisation energies decrease going down the group and less energy is required to remove the outer shell electrons, so the reactivity INCREASES going down the group.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLARIFY THAT 1) THE IONISATION ENERGIES DECREASE GOING DOWN ANDDD 2) THAT THE REACTIVITY INCREASES GOING DOWN, BC THIS LAST PART IS WHAT THE QUESTION IS ACTUALLY ABOUT
