Q

Speed if light in different media

A

The density of the material through which the light is moving can slow down the light due to greater interaction which atoms in the way

Q

Wavelength of light

A

The angle of light is related to how much energy they have. This impacts how much the light twists when it shifts from one medium to another

Q

1st rule of refraction

A

The oath of light will bend towards the normal when it transitions from a fast medium, and moves into a slow medium

Q

2nd rule of refraction.

A

When light moves from a slow medium into a FAST medium, the path of light will bend AWAY from the normal

Q

Apparent depth

A

When light from an object in water is observed by someone outside of the water from an angle the refraction of light lead to an illusion related to position and depth

Q

Mirage

A

A mirage is the illusory perception of water where there is none. The reflection of light off of the water is the only example in nature where light is reflected from ground level

Q

Mirage pt. 2

A

A mirage is caused bye the refraction of light as it moves through air at different temperatures over a hot surface

Q

Refraction and critical angle

A

When the light is bent such that its angle of refraction is 90 degrees we have reached what is known as the critical angle. Beyond this point light is reflected back into the og medium

Q

Critical angle

A

The critical angle is the incident angle beyond which light will no longer be refracted but will be reflected back into the medium

Q

Total internat reflection

A

Once we exceed the critical angle total internal reflection occurs where all light is reflected back into the medium. The rules of reflection apply at this point rather than the laws of refraction.

Q

Fiver option cables

A

Fiver optic cables allow transmission of info at the speed if light rather than relying on the flow of electricity, it works via total inertial reflection of light along a cable with a low critical angle

Q

Diamond

A

Diamonds are sparkly because of total internal reflection. Gem cutters will cut crystals at specific angles in order to maximize the sparkle of the gem stone.
