Regulation of body fluid compartments Flashcards
(11 cards)
What percentage of the body is water?
60%
How is the water distributed?
40% body weight intracellular, 20% body weight extracellular. 60% of total bodyweight

How is the 20% extracellular distributed?
80% interstitial fluid
20% Plasma

What is the osmolality of ECF?
290m/osm
What mechanisms regulate body fluid comparments?
Both up and down
- Osmolality HYPOTHALAMUS. If the osmolality is too high then ADH is released and vice versa
- Volume - Baroreceptors in the aortic arch and carotid sinus measure BP. If it is too low then the aldosterone pathway is initiated. If it is too high then ANP is released

What does hypoosmotic contraction look like?
eg salt wasting

what does hypoosmotic expansion look like?
Eg too much ADH - SIADH

what does hyperosmotic expansion look like?
eg Increased Na

what does hypersmotic contraction look like?
eg sweating

what does isoosmotic expansion look like?
eg too much Hartmanns

what does isoosmotic contraction look like?
eg cholera
